Essential Equipment for Making Candles

28/02/2024
Are you eager to start creating your own candles? Let’s begin at the beginning! Before embarking on this new adventure of making candles, make sure you have the right equipment.
What do you need?
THE ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT
Firstly, you’ll need a saucepan. The good news is that you can use an existing kitchen saucepan for the double boiler method, which is ideal for beginners.
You’ll need to use a double boiler to gently melt your wax without agitating it. When preparing your wax, it’s essential to monitor and control temperatures, so you’ll need a thermometer (either a specialized one or a kitchen thermometer).
You’ll also need a scale, a standard kitchen scale is suitable, as it’s important to measure the quantities of the various products you’ll use throughout the candle-making process.
To weigh, melt, and pour your wax, use a suitable container with a pouring spout, such as a glass, stainless steel, or cast iron beaker.
During the candle-making process, you’ll use various products like wax, fragrance, colorants, etc. Mix them together to achieve a homogeneous mixture with a kitchen spatula reserved exclusively for this purpose.
If you’re making container candles, you’ll need to keep the wick centered when pouring the wax. Therefore, you should have a wick centering tool on hand. There are ready-made ones (made of wood or metal), or you can create your own using items like kebab skewers.
OPTIONAL BUT PRACTICAL EQUIPMENT
Now, let’s discuss useful but non-essential equipment for beginners. When pouring your candles, it’s crucial to pour the wax slowly and evenly. Use a piston funnel to control the flow of wax.
If your finished candles have minor imperfections, you can use a heat gun to conceal them and smooth the surface.
Your list of equipment is ready, and now you're all set to get started! Happy crafting!
